These comments are just ill informed rubbish. Prof. Chandrasekhar, Jayati Ghosh and such others talk about India and conditions in India and not about China or other countries. That is a separate subject. Yes,if full convertibility of the rupee is allowed as wanted by the Central Government flight of capital will result. India,s foreign exchange reserve is a burden and not a strength. Whereas hardly around $60 billion is required for servicing trade deficit and other external commitments, India is having over $200 billion dollar. That is under developed India is lending cheap capital to industrialized United States. At long last, the government has realized that it is foolish and decided to utilize some portion of it for India's development. No communist is as dangerous as such half-baked wisecracks like you. Dont't again bother me with your wisdoms.

Annoy(comment 3)is confused.
The left economists made many
predictions after 1991 that were found to be untrue.Full convertibility is a different issue. But the software boom
was not anticpated by them.Their
assessment of IT&ITES sector is
biased. These two economists have
written about India and about China. There is more to academic
studies on Indian economics than
what emantes from that citadel
of lefts - JNU. Some of the brilliant and brighest economists
like T.N.Srinivasan,Jagdish Bagwati are not marxists.

I want make a comment on comment no 3. ie., in Tamil. I dont know how to register my view in tamil here. Hence I write in English. It is apparaent that the commentator is spewing venom on left idealogus. Does he have any credible evidence that China don't have any labour laws or not implementing labour laws or dont have labour laws in any part of China, particularly in ETDZ (Economic and Trade Development Zone)? I dont find any such thing so far, though the opponents of left speaks volume about the exploitation of labour in China. It shall be much helpful to me if he provide something on this. The Left economists are consistantly cautioning the economic decisions of Govt; their predictions comes true right from the days of IMF loan by R. Venkatraman to the current opinion on TRIPS and its implications on prices of medicine or the current agrarian crisis. Now the left alone not opposing the LPG policies, various other NGOs and organisations are opposing the LPG policies globally after sensing its ill-effect; but it is the left who not only predicted correctly the ongoig contours of the economy but also predicted that the contour shall create new set of organisations which will join with left in protesting the LPG policies. I have a open mind in engaging debate with the commentator on the ill effects of LPG policies predicted by Left, if the commentator willing to provide the evidences on the Left's prediction and its failure.

Prof Chandrasekar never say no to IT and never negate Indias the earnings in forex. What we need to think about is that the ratio of productivity to the employment generation when compared to the other industries. though the share of IT revenue to the GDP is 4.55% where as the employment generation is just .88 millions. See below the statistics

Textile workers 8.84
Principal usual status workers 417
Non agricultural work force 189

(Source NSSO 2001 and 2006)

the point here is the IT industry has generated employment as is claiming to be the biggest revenue earner of the country. Mr ITians, dont get excited about your high salaries, think about your stress and exploitation.

With work force less than 1% of population IT industry contributes 4.55% of GDP. The indirect employment is not taken into
account.We can generate more
employment in manufacturing
and export oriented units
provide we open up more, encourage FDI, change our labour laws and
give incentives for export units.
But the left is opposing all such
moves.China allows Walmart to open shops and Walmart buys billions of dollars worth goods from China.Left opposes Walmart. How
will Walmart use India as a base
if we dont want them to open shops
here.So the myopic left ideology is
holding us back.China discarded
much of the left ideology as garbage long ago.

An interesting debate on Left ideology on Economics on this blog. The latest being the support voice for Walmart citing China's example. Before comparing China with India one must understand the nature of Economics of the both countries. China is a supply constrained economy whereas India is a demand constrained economy. The strategy for development could not be identical for both countries. It is a basic economic theory acceptable to all, ranging from left to right is that monopoly in any sector will lead to stagnation and that is why all countries have some sort of control of monopoly in their statues. If you have more than one monopoly in any sector it shall lead to carterlisation which again hinder the growth. Opening up the retail trade to mulinational monopoly will ruin the life of millions of small traders which again push the country to more demand constraints. Hence opposition to walmart by left is arising out of their concern over the millions of small traders apart from the defective growth strategy it promotes.

Speaking of monopoly, for decades we had state monopoly in many sectors including telecom, power
and civil aviation.What was the
result?. Earlier one had to wait
for years for a phone connection
or to buy a scooter. Now manufacturers and dealers are
after customers.The left all along
opposed opening up telecom sector.
It favored public sector monopolies. It has a vested
there as the trade unions there
form the support base of left.
Even in USA Wal-mart has more than
enough competition from stores of
all types. We need competition laws to take care of monopolies
and oligopolies.You should not use
monopoly as a bogey to deny competition and support inefficiency.

First, it is not true that Left has vested interest against Privatisation of the Telecom sector as it has Trade union base. They don't command majority of telecom workers and there could not be vested interest to safeguard their minority members. Left's opposition to privatise the large industries arises, not only out of workers interest but in the national interest. Large industries such as steel, oil and gas etc are capital intensive and need long gestation period. All of them were established with the help of state out of the money collected from people as tax. Once the turnaround is achieved, they sought to privatise it which is unethical. Opposition to opening up of the telecom sector to the multinationals by the left is due to security issues when you have larger insurgency problem. Walmart's strategy is a debatable issue in US and you can find lot of materials on the study of Walmart's strategy. It pressurises the small manufacturers to reduce the cost in the name of voluminous order which lead to reduction in wages of the workers of suppliers of Walmart which again pushes the country to demand contraints.

Every MBA student of any university in the world must study the success story of Walmart; ie.,the one side of a coin. If you agree with the way it achieves it success or can you be discount it as a real success is a different matter. You need to be convinced yourself with the strategy of walmart if you want to be accepted as a creamy layer of student and to open your door for career development. This is not a new thing the voice for breaking the doors of third world countries or reaching the every corner of world by the advanced countries. It was raised as early in 1907 by then American Presidential candidate Woodro Wilson who later becomes President. (See the Peoples History of United States of America) The case to support walmart in India is a week and they only take the weapon of Walmart in China or hide behind China’s example. “Everyday low price” is the slogan of walmart and it import goods largely from China to offer lowest prices to its customers. 80% of its imported goods are from China and in lieu of that China allowed its terrotiory to open the company’s retail outlets. For more information about Walmartt please read “The Bulloy of Bentonville” by Anthony Bianco. However I totally disagree with this strategy of China. India and China now possesses huge Foreign Exchange reserves. No body knows if we have foreign exchange reserve, it means that we are given loan to US at a lower interest rate. When Gold standard was abolished and US dollar takes its position in 1970s, US has no commitment to earn gold to pay its debt to other countries, instead it can print notes and give it to them. Any macro economic policy should be viewed comprehensively before coming to any conclusion. The Lefts in India are touching only the part of the deeper issues involved in macro economics and there is no point in blaming the left for not supporting the LPG policies.
